Comcast and Diamond Sports Group Reach New Carriage Agreement

In a significant breakthrough for sports broadcasting, Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have reached a new carriage agreement. This pivotal deal resolves a protracted blackout period, allowing Comcast customers to once again access Bally Sports channels. The resumption of broadcasts, set to begin at the start of August, is a welcome relief for fans eager to watch their favorite local teams.

Resuming Local Sports Broadcasts

The blackout, which disrupted viewing for months, saw Bally Sports channels pulled off air since May. This was particularly challenging for Diamond Sports Group, as the company has been embroiled in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings for the past 16 months. The new agreement marks a positive step in the company's efforts to navigate and restructure amidst financial challenges.

David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group, underscored the importance of the deal in a recent statement: "Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity."

A Broader Reach Through Xfinity

This agreement directly impacts Xfinity subscribers, particularly those with the "Ultimate TV" package, enabling them to watch live, local games from MLB, NBA, and NHL. Comcast has a substantial presence in key markets such as Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami, where local sports content is a significant draw for viewers.

Subscribers of the "Ultimate TV" package are in for a treat, as they get a complimentary three-month trial before the package incurs an additional cost of $20 per month. This package must be upgraded by customers before August 30 to take advantage of the deal.

Enhanced Viewing Options

Beyond traditional broadcasts, Bally Sports' streaming app provides in-market viewing options for fans of the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers. This digital alternative enhances accessibility for viewers who prefer streaming over linear broadcasts. However, fans of the Braves and Twins will need to rely on the broadcast channels for their local game coverage.

Diamond Sports Group’s Future Plans

With the new carriage deal secure, Diamond Sports Group is now turning its focus to finalizing agreements with the NHL and NBA. Preschlack highlighted the urgency of these negotiations, stating, "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA."

"We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court," he further elaborated.

The timely negotiation of these agreements is crucial, not just for the company's restructuring plans but also for ensuring that fans receive uninterrupted coverage of upcoming sports seasons. The company currently holds linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams and owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner.

Looking Forward

This new carriage agreement with Comcast is a significant step in a broader strategy to stabilize and rebuild Diamond Sports Group. As the company moves toward finalizing deals with the NHL and NBA, presenting a reorganization plan to the court becomes a more tangible goal. Fans can look forward to a more stable and predictable sports viewing experience as the new agreements are implemented.

The ability of Diamond Sports Group to navigate through its financial challenges and secure such critical deals speaks volumes of its commitment to ensuring fans have access to their hometown teams. As the new seasons approach, sports enthusiasts across key markets can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing their favorite games will be readily accessible once again.
