Memphis Grizzlies to Retire Tony Allen's Jersey
The Memphis Grizzlies are set to honor one of their most beloved players, Tony Allen, by raising his No. 9 jersey to the rafters at FedExForum next March. This long-anticipated moment will take place after the Grizzlies' game against the Miami Heat on March 15.
Allen will become the third member of the team's famed "Core Four" to receive this prestigious honor. Previously, Zach Randolph's No. 50 and Marc Gasol's No. 33 jerseys were retired, solidifying their lasting legacy within the franchise.
Over the course of seven seasons with Memphis, Allen made an indelible mark on the team and the city. Known for his tenacious defense and unrelenting hustle, he quickly earned the affection of Grizzlies fans and the respect of his peers. In his first season with Memphis, Allen transitioned from being a role player with the Boston Celtics to becoming a starter, replacing O.J. Mayo. He not only adapted to this new role but thrived in it, earning All-Defensive honors for the first time in his career.
Allen's career with the Grizzlies saw him make the All-Defensive team six times, including three First Team selections. He ranks second in franchise history for steals, trailing only Mike Conley. Additionally, he sits sixth in games played and ninth in offensive rebounds. His nickname, "The Grindfather," became synonymous with the gritty, hard-nosed style of play that defined the Grizzlies during his tenure.
Before his time with Memphis, Allen began his NBA journey with the Boston Celtics, where he played for six seasons and won an NBA Championship in 2008. In 2010, Memphis acquired Allen on a three-year contract, a decision that would prove transformative for both parties. His defensive prowess and leadership were integral to the Grizzlies' identity, often anchoring their defense and setting the tone for the team.
However, Allen's post-retirement years haven't been without controversy. In October 2021, he was charged for his involvement in a scheme to defraud the NBA’s health and welfare benefits plan. By April 2023, Allen pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, agreeing to repay most of the money involved. Fortunately for Allen, his sentence in August 2023 included community service and supervision, allowing him to avoid jail time.
Despite these legal troubles, the Grizzlies organization has chosen to focus on Allen's significant contributions to the team and the community. Allen had previously indicated that his jersey retirement would occur during the 2024-25 season, and this announcement comes as a testament to his enduring legacy with the franchise.
With his jersey set to be immortalized alongside his former teammates, Tony Allen's No. 9 will forever be a reminder of the grit, grind, and glory days of the Memphis Grizzlies. As the team and its fans prepare for this special event, it is a time to reflect on the profound impact Allen had on the court and to celebrate a player whose dedication and heart continue to inspire.
