As the Arizona Cardinals prepare for their upcoming season, there's an air of optimism surrounding the team, particularly with the recovery and readiness of quarterback Kyler Murray. Following a challenging previous year, marked by Murray's ACL injury sustained late in the 2022 campaign, the team's prospects now look considerably brighter.
Murray's Road to Recovery
Last year, the Cardinals began their first season under head coach Jonathan Gannon with Murray on the sidelines, recovering from a severe ACL injury. Despite this setback, Murray's commitment to his rehabilitation was unwavering. Throughout the offseason, he worked tirelessly with the team's trainers, demonstrating an impressive dedication to regaining his full health.
This year's offseason has been marked by a significant difference for Murray. Unlike the previous year, he participated fully in the Cardinals' offseason program, signaling a promising return to form. Reflecting on Murray's condition, Gannon observed, "Physically and mentally, I mean, he looks damn good. He looks damn good."
Return to the Field
Upon his return from injury last season, Murray showcased his resilience and skill. He completed 65.7% of his passes, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. His performance throughout the season included 10 touchdowns and five interceptions, alongside 244 rushing yards and three additional touchdowns on the ground. These statistics reflect a quarterback who, despite the physical and mental challenges of returning from a major injury, was able to perform at a high level.
Gannon highlighted the challenges faced by Murray in his comeback, noting, "You know, 'cause you gotta think, he played really good football for us; he had never taken a snap in this offense until Atlanta [in Week 10], you know what I mean, his first game back. I mean, he had a couple weeks of practice leading up to that, but no offseason program, no training camp. No however many games we played without him. Couple weeks of practice and then, you're going, 'Let's play football.'"
Leaps and Bounds Ahead
Murray's progress since then has been notable. Gannon further remarked, "So, I think from a mental and physical standpoint, right now where he's at, to even when he got back last year or even where he finished last year, I think he's leaps and bounds ahead." This statement underscores the significant strides Murray has made, not only in recovering from his injury but also in his overall performance as a quarterback.
High Expectations and Leadership
The Cardinals are not just optimistic about Murray's physical condition; his leadership qualities have also been a focal point for Gannon. "What I know about the guy, my relationship with him when I got this job: His will to win is extremely high," Gannon shared. He further acknowledged Murray’s willingness to improve and take on new challenges, stating, "And if you detail out and lay out for him what is needed from him to improve himself, the offense and the team, he is one thousand percent willing to do that."
Gannon's praise for Murray extends beyond his on-field capabilities. "So, I love the guy, because he's done everything that I've asked of him and more. He's been a phenomenal leader on and off the field -- not just with the offense, but with the entire team," he said, highlighting the quarterback's integral role in the team dynamic.
New Additions to the Squad
In addition to Murray’s recovery, the Cardinals have bolstered their offensive lineup by adding rookie wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., whose potential to impact games is highly anticipated. This addition is expected to provide Murray with more options and enhance the team’s overall offensive strategy.
As the new season approaches, the Cardinals find themselves in a much better place than they were a year ago. With Murray’s return to full health, his demonstrated leadership, and the infusion of new talent, the team is poised to make significant strides. All eyes will be on Murray and his performance as he aims to lead the Cardinals to a successful season.
