As the Dallas Cowboys approach their 2024 NFL regular season opener against the Cleveland Browns, the clock ticks with just 18 days remaining. The spotlight, however, has turned to the contract situations of two of their star players: wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott.
Spotlight on CeeDee Lamb
CeeDee Lamb, 25, is in the final year of his rookie contract. Last season, Lamb showcased his elite skills by leading the league with 135 catches, cementing his status as one of the top receivers in the NFL. Despite his remarkable performance, Lamb has chosen to hold out of the entire offseason program, placing added pressure on the Cowboys' management to secure his future with the team.
The Cowboys have reportedly extended an offer to Lamb, which falls just under $33 million per season. This figure is slightly more than the $32 million average annual salary earned by the Philadelphia Eagles' A.J. Brown. However, Lamb's decision to hold out indicates he might be seeking a deal akin to the four-year, $140 million extension that Justin Jefferson secured with the Minnesota Vikings, $110 million of which is guaranteed.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones remains optimistic about reaching an agreement with Lamb. "We're in good shape there. We're having good talks. I think I am [optimistic]," Jones stated. "The facts are that I believe we'll come together. I don't want to speak for him. That's what I'm trying not to do. But we wouldn't have offered him what we've offered him if we didn't want him to be here."
The Future of Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott, now 31, finds himself in the final season of his four-year, $160 million contract. This contract includes a no-franchise-tag clause and a no-trade clause, giving Prescott significant leverage in any potential negotiations. If a new deal is not reached, Prescott could enter unrestricted free agency next offseason, a scenario that the Cowboys' brass is likely eager to avoid.
Jones has also addressed the negotiations involving Prescott. "Well again, we're just continuing to talk," he commented. While discussions continue, the Cowboys are primarily focusing on prepping for the upcoming season. "The thing is there, since we're really in-season, practicing, doing all those things, we're operating under the existing contract really good. One of the things that the fans should really understand is that nine times out of ten, these are existing contracts that you have in place. You should be able to operate under those, but we've gotten it now in the NFL -- other teams are dealing with it -- with some time on the contract, you still might have a contract discussion. And that's what we're doing. None of us -- player or team -- want to hurt the preparation or likelihood of playing at your best," Jones elaborated.
The Stakes for Dallas
With both Lamb and Prescott's futures uncertain, the Cowboys face crucial decisions that could significantly impact their prospects this season and beyond. Lamb's exceptional performance last year, combined with Prescott's status as the team's primary quarterback, underscores the importance of retaining both players.
As the opener against the Browns draws closer, the Cowboys will need to balance immediate on-field preparations with the ongoing contractual discussions. While the urgency of the season's start may temporarily shift focus away from negotiations, the resolution of these contracts will be pivotal in shaping the franchise's direction.
The situation remains fluid, with fans and analysts alike keeping a close eye on developments. For now, the Cowboys must navigate both the challenges on the field and the complexities of player contracts, hoping to emerge with a cohesive and competitive team ready for the season ahead.
