The Anaheim Ducks Expands Accessibility with New Broadcasting Strategy
The Anaheim Ducks are set to revolutionize their local game broadcasting by shifting to a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and local broadcast channels. This strategic move is aimed at significantly enhancing accessibility for fans throughout the Ducks' TV market, ensuring no fan is left behind when it comes to watching their favorite team in action.
In a landmark decision announced recently, the Ducks revealed that an impressive 65 of their games for the upcoming season will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles. Additionally, all games will be available for streaming regionally on the Victory+ streaming service, a platform that will be free of charge to viewers and supported by advertisements.
“We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air), will see locally broadcast games free of charge,” stated Ducks president Aaron Teats. His sentiment underscores the organization's commitment to providing accessible game viewing options across multiple platforms at no cost to the fans.
The new broadcasting arrangement marks the end of the Ducks' contract with former broadcaster, Diamond Sports Group, which expired at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season. The timing of this transition is notable as Diamond Sports Group finds itself embroiled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, adding a layer of uncertainty to its operations. Although Diamond Sports Group will continue carrying games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season, the Ducks have clearly opted for a more innovative approach to reach their regional audience that includes Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii.
Seamless Transition with Familiar Faces
To ensure continuity and maintain a strong connection with the fans, long-time broadcasters Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain part of the Ducks' broadcast team. This decision highlights the organization's intent to blend modernization with familiar elements cherished by their loyal fan base.
The over-the-air broadcasts will be accessible on Channel 13, while the Victory+ app will be downloadable on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September. This technology-driven shift is designed to cater to the diverse viewing habits of contemporary fans, whether they prefer traditional television or digital streaming devices.
Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, partners in this new broadcasting arrangement, praised the Ducks' proactive stance, noting, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” This recognition reflects the expertise and forward-thinking approach that the Ducks are bringing to their new broadcasting model.
Broader Trends in NHL Broadcasting
The Ducks aren't alone in reshaping how local games are broadcasted. The Florida Panthers, for instance, have moved their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars also plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+. This broader shift among NHL teams represents a growing trend within the league to embrace more flexible and fan-friendly viewing options.
Even as Diamond Sports Group maintains agreements with other major sports franchises like the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA), the Ducks' strategic pivot to direct-to-consumer streaming and local broadcasting is a clear indication of the evolving landscape in sports media rights and fan engagement strategies.
The new broadcasting format is not just a logistical change but a strategic pivot aimed at deepening fan engagement. “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms,” emphasized Teats. By prioritizing accessibility and cost-free viewing, the Ducks are sending a strong message about their dedication to fostering a stronger, more inclusive fan community.
As the Ducks prepare to launch this new initiative, fans can anticipate a seamless blend of on-screen familiarity and cutting-edge technology designed to bring hockey action closer than ever before. With Victory+ offering a free, ad-supported service and the added convenience of over-the-air broadcasting, the upcoming season promises to be a transformative period for the Ducks and their supporters.
